In the mid 14th century, thanks to John Mandeville, Europeans believed that cotton imported from India came from trees that bore tiny lambs on the ends of it's branches; each branch was pliable enough for the lambs to feed whenever hungry. This myth has been retained in the name for cotton in many European languages including German.
